A failure to communicate

The tool I’ve been using to footnote definitions of terms some readers may not know has a problem. It can result in broken RSS and Atom feeds which don’t validate, usually due to non-UTF8 characters in strings which are defined as UTF8 strings. In turn this causes various RSS readers and aggregators (eg Bloglines and Technorati) to fail to import the feed. Ooops.

For now I’ve removed the offending definition linkages (suet(def) and jocund(def)) and am on the lookout for a replacement WordPress plugin, preferably one based on dict1.

Footnotes
  1. I’m a frequent, nay, near-constant user of dict.

I’ve whacked together a new WordPress plugin based around the dict and the dict protocol along with lightbox-style floats of in-line DIVs (so they’ll still be indexed and will degrade nicely). There’s a little CSS left to clean up, but the basics are there now and I’ve re-enabled the definition tags for “suet” and “jocund”.

Definition links now connect to a dynamic page for that word. Remaining tasks are to clean up the lightbox CSS and remove the author info from the definition page. The first is minor but tiresome. The later, given that I made the page via a shorttag, I’m not sure how to do.

The WordPress dictionary plugin is available upon request. See the post above for an example usage.
